This image looks predominately an easy shot but putting the elements together was time consuming, expensive and frankly scary at one point!

War in the Woods (Artistic Residency with Interlope)

The Kings Wood in the Stour Valley, near Ashford in Kent, has a resonant history with conflict and war. The trees were almost all completely removed in the First World War because of the desperate need for timber and in reaction to such losses the Forestry Commission was born.

In the Second World War the women`s Timber Corps cut down chestnut for pit props and also cleared many acres in the making of charcoal for gas masks and filters. The palings of Kings Wood became temporary air strips and a site on the edge of the woods was used for both a launching pit for a air ship and a secret bunker for a resistance force in case of invasion, in consecutive wars.

The woods suffered great loss which directly contributed to the devastation of the first world war battlefields. There are few trees in the Kings Wood older than a 100 years old today and the landscape is forever changed. - Fleur Alston

This image is an experiment that has it`s roots in two of my projects. I`m not sure where it fits at the moment but I suppose that`s why it is a work in progress.
